Superior German craftsmanship in woodwork, stained glass, vestments, and vessels are all to be found in the German built Church of St. Stephen. It is arguably one of Cleveland’s most sophisticated and historically comprehensive High Victorian Gothic Revival interiors of any regional house of worship. The Germans left nothing to chance: everything had an intended purpose and calculated placement. As a result, this created one of Cleveland’s best examples of a monumental landmark with a tangible sense of place. It is an environment that naturally speaks to those who enter its walls and is definitely worth the effort to experience. The contrast between the somewhat severe exterior and the extremely decorative interior yields a memorable jewel box-like quality. It is often cited as a "touch of Europe" in our own backyard.
