Update: Take a Hike, the Award-Winning Walking Tour Program, has Returned

The award-winning Take a Hike program, presented by Dollar Bank, returns to educate and entertain attendees in 2016 from May 15th through September 18th.  Over 22,200 people have “taken a hike” to date.

Offering five, free, guided walking tours in vibrant Downtown neighborhoods each week, Take a Hike offers locals and visitors alike the opportunity to explore the Gateway District, Warehouse District, Civic Center, Canal Basin Park in the Flats and the Playhouse Square neighborhood.

History comes to life on each tour as talented cast members portray important Clevelanders from the past. Tour attendees will learn about the history, architecture, interesting trivia and future plans of each tour area, and meet blasts from the past when they encounter historic Clevelanders, such as John D. Rockefeller, Alan Freed, Garrett Morgan and others along the way. A new character, Librarian Linda Eastman, is being added to the Civic Center tour in 2016!

The Canal Basin Park tours meets every Sunday at 10 AM at the Flat Iron Café (1114 Center Street).

The Civic Center tour meets every Tuesday at 6 PM at Old Stone Church (91 Public Square).

The Warehouse District tour meets every Wednesday at 6 PM in front of Constantino’s Market (1278 West 9th Street).

The Playhouse Square tour meets every Thursday at 6 PM in the State Theatre Lobby (1519 Euclid Avenue).

The Gateway District tour meets every Saturday at 10 AM in the Arcade (401 Euclid Avenue).

Each tour lasts approximately one and a half hours in length.  Donations are encouraged to help match grants.  Reservations are greatly appreciated for planning purposes, especially for groups of ten or more.

Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation’s Take a Hike program, presented by Dollar Bank, is supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. Generous support is also provided by Ohio & Erie Canalway. Program partners include Downtown Cleveland Alliance, Historic Warehouse District Development Corporation, PlayhouseSquare, Canalway Partners, Bob Zimmer of Keller Williams Realty and Cleveland Magazine.

In 2015, the Take a Hike program was awarded a Public Education and Awareness Award from the State Historic Preservation Office of the Ohio History Connection.
