When the Ohio & Erie Canalway was officially established as a National Heritage Area by Congress in 1996 it was given a funding cap of $10 million and a sunset date of 2012. No more than $1 million could be granted in any eligible year. This funding was also contingent on the Ohio & Erie Canalway meeting two major requirements: creating a Management Plan within three years, and maintaining a $1:$1 ratio of local match funding for every federal dollar granted and expended. The Ohio & Erie Canalway has met these requirements. The authorizing legislation has been amended to expand the funding cap to $15 million, while the sunset date has been extended to 2021.
In the 2016 Omnibus Appropriations bill, the authorizing legislation for the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area received a further funding cap extension to $17 million. The funding cap extension allow the Ohio & Erie Canalway to seek annual appropriations for federal funding to continue the work of developing the National Heritage Area by preserving, connecting and interpreting its natural, historic and cultural resources.
