Today, the City of Cleveland joined other officials in announcing the award of a $700,000 grant for Stage 3 of the Towpath Trail Extension Project from the Ohio Department of Public Works, through the Clean Ohio Green Space Conservation Program.

The “Towpath Trail: Tremont Point Preserve & Greenway” project will use the funding to acquire 21.7 acres of property for the Towpath Trail Greenway, restoring natural open space and protecting the area from development. The property acquisition consists of 11.25 acres located next to the Tremont Pointe Apartments and Interstate 490, and 10.45 acres between West 3rd and West 5th Street in the City of Cleveland.

Stage 3 of the Towpath Trail Extension Project will run 1.9 miles from the northern entrance of Steelyard Commons to Literary Ave., providing an important link between the populous Cleveland neighborhood Tremont, the employment and retail center Steelyard Commons and the public outdoor recreation area Clark Fields. Stage 3 is the longest stage in the Towpath Trail Extension Project.

Cuyahoga County is the project manager of the Towpath Trail Extension Project, in charge of tracking project funds and contracts. Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish said “The Towpath Trail enhances the quality of life for residents of Cuyahoga County. Clean Ohio Funds have brought significant match funding for the completion of the Towpath Trail in Cleveland. We thank the taxpayers who voted to introduce and sustain it and the legislators who continue to fund this important program.”

The County is joined in a project development agreement with the City of Cleveland, Cleveland Metroparks and Canalway Partners. The City of Cleveland will own the property associated with the project and contributes staff support from the departments of City Planning and Capital Projects. “I am grateful to the many partners who continue their support for the Towpath Trail,” said Mayor Frank G. Jackson.

“This latest grant of $700,000.00 from the Clean Ohio Green Space Conservation Program will help fund Stage 3 of this project and complete the final 6 miles of the 101-mile trail linking Cleveland to New Philadelphia.”

Cleveland Metroparks will handle day-to-day management of the Towpath Trail in Cleveland. Metroparks CEO Brian Zimmerman said “There is an undeniable momentum in trail developments in Cleveland. The awarding of the Clean Ohio Funds continues that progress. It won’t be long before the connections in Cleveland will be completed.”

Canalway Partners Executive Director Tim Donovan adds that “Clean Ohio provides the sole source of state funding for trails and greenways in Ohio. The fact is that demand has grown exponentially for this limited funding pool. We thank our local NRAC for their analysis that ranked the Towpath Trail first in a very competitive round.”

To date, the Clean Ohio Green Space Conservation Program has awarded $2.14 million to acquire, restore and preserve 39.5 acres of property in Stage 3 of the Towpath Trail Extension Project.
