The organization formerly known as Ohio Canal Corridor is now Canalway Partners.

After a year-long examination of our organization’s identity, our Trustees voted unanimously to change our name and adopt a new logo.  We are now – Canalway Partners.

We made this change to address a core critique that our name (Ohio Canal Corridor) did not effectively relate who we are; what we do; and how we do it. The attending logo was complicated in its messaging. One unintended outcome was that the organizational name competed with the project name (Ohio & Erie Canalway), causing confusion for some. As an organization, we conducted this exercise with specific goals.  We wanted a name that:

  1. Would contain no more than 2 words – we wanted to avoid the alphabetization of our name = OCC
  2. Would provide a clear relationship to our project – Ohio & Erie Canalway – we wanted our name to promote  awareness of the project
  3. Provides some description on who we are/ how we do business

Given these parameters, we chose the word “Canalway” as the shortened version of the project name – Ohio & Erie Canalway.  For our second word choice, were viewed a wide range of options, but settled on “Partners” for an obvious reason – everything we do, all of our accomplishments  depend on a partnering relationships with an array of organizations, agencies and individuals. Our new name, Canalway Partners, reflects how we work through grassroots partnerships and collaborations between residents, local businesses, government agencies and non-profit organizations. We partner to link the considerable natural and cultural assets of the Canalway using the Towpath Trail network, America’s Byway and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Our new logo is an image that illustrates our role as the leading organization for the Ohio & Erie Canalway in Cuyahoga County/Cleveland.

This change opens an opportunity to re-introduce ourselves, to share the many stories of our involvement in the projects and programs we have nurtured – again with our Partners.  We will take this opportunity in the weeks and months ahead through a regular series of E-newsletters and an updated web site. We look forward to expanding our base of support and to continue the good work we have started.

Our most important Canalway Partner is you!  We rely on citizens who truly care about their home to make neighborhood improvement projects such as RiverSweep and fun events such as the Towpath Trilogy race series happen. As Canalway Partners we pledge to continue to work together to make our community a better place to live.
